Spruce and Diamond Willow Stairway Railing with Gate

Before work started....
there was a rail.....
of factory oak.
First we made new log posts....
and new log bannisters...
a couple of support posts...
Secured the main posts to the ceiling...
then started making willow balusters...
took out the old rail and built new stairs, drilled and fitted the landing and rail....
notched the middle posts to cradle the rail....
fitted the rest of the balusters....

and finally, test fit the whole thing.

Now it's ready for final sanding, varnishing and permanent installation! On to the Diamond willow gate......

A spruce frame and willow bars form the gate, shown ready to hang...
And the railing is complete, and installed! A matching handrail on the wall completes the set...
The view from the bottom of the stairs....
The upper landing rail is inset, allowing for tiles to be installed around the spindles....
One of the main features of the rail is this large, striped post at the bottom landing...

And after 2 coats of varnish, it is ready to be permanently installed!

Sturdy black hardware secures the weight of the gate...

Once the latch is installed, the gate closes off the stairs, and can be opened from either side (check back for photos of latch).

The view from the room below...

And, with the exception of the gate latch, the railing system is complete! Gate, handrail, balustrade and landing rail. All finished with a clear spar varnish. Another Alaskan original!!! JBM
